Maple Syrup Cake

1/3 cup margarine or shortening
1/2 cup sugar (white)
3/4 cup strong maple syrup
3 egg whites beaten | 2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla or maple flavoring if mild flavored syrup is used |
Cream shortening and sugar. Add syrup and stir well. Add milk alternately with dry ingedients sifted together. Beat well. Fold in the beaten egg whites, add flavoring and bake in oblong greased pan, about 9x4 inch. Bake 35 minutes at 350F. (Check back for maple syrup icing)
